Today Room 209 practiced having a healthy brain and body by taking part in a yoga class. The students learned a variety of different yoga poses while playing fun games, like freeze dance and "toega" (where they needed to pick up pompoms with their toes!). At the end of the class, the students had a chance to relax by laying on their yoga mats and getting a foot massage from the instructor! After the class, Room 209 had a picnic lunch in Madison Square Park and had some time to play in the playground. The students did an amazing job working on having a healthy mind!

Welcome to our first blog of the summer! Room 209 students have been busy getting to know each other, new teachers and of course their new classroom. Students have been actively participating in helping to set up the room by creating a job chart and birthday graph. Our library has been freshly organized (by the students of course), which sparked a conversation about fiction and non-fiction and discussions about different kinds of genres. Our summer unit theme is “Whole Body Health”, and our first week focused on different kinds of exercise (specifically working with the categories of Balance, Endurance, Strength and Flexibility). Each student has selected a particular exercise they want to work on, and will be using graphing skills to illustrate change over the next 5 weeks. Ask your child what his/her exercise choice is and help them work on it! The week of July 17th we introduced the topic of nutrition, identifying five food groups (dairy, protein, fruits and vegetables, grains) and asked them to track their dinners for the week.
